I really would like to see clips from the Peter Schiff was right video in campaign ads. There is a reason that that video went viral. It's PROVEN to be very effective at getting people interested in what you have to say. Play a couple clips with the dates printed at the bottom.. end with something like "Isn't it time we had someone who understands the problems we face representing us in Congress?" Any other video may or may not be effective, but we know that one is.

@DSBac The problem was that the government at the time put people who did not believe in regulation or were incompetent into the job as regulators. They didn't do their job correctly. I don't really care about Greenspan but the glory of the Free Market is a myth. The banks made those loans because of the failure of regulation, not because of the interest rate. The interest rate just made it more lucrative but it is not the real cause of the problem.

At least Irwin Schiff isn't pretending to believe something and then act contrary to that belief. Right or wrong he apparently was pretty consistent with his belief. Greenspan, on the other hand, masquerades as a free market proponent, but his actions reveal something altogether different. Also, many Americans hate the income tax - with or without Irwin Schiff.

But this is a very brief summary. You should check out Schiff's "Mortgage Bankers speech" which is like an hour long - but he lays it out in good detail - what would happen before it happened. @LaMontagne1982 actually being forced to sell and not produce, products in North America rather than imported from China, has been what makes most people poor. There are not enough wages from existing jobs and those jobs are always being cut too, so it's a vicious cycle unrelated to regulation. It's wage-parity: people in China don't get paid enough so people here have to starve unless we sensibly use protectionism, one of the smartest things we can do for our future of jobs.

There's safe spots away from the downtown core in Vancouver you can sleep and relax. I lived once at the nude beach, day and night, and it was reasonably safe on all counts. VERY relaxing ;)

If we're arguing about productivity, rather than focusing on the number of days you get off a year, because, let's face it, 20-25 working days really isn't very much, the bigger issue is directives on legal maximum weekly working hours. Staying an extra half hour/hour/... at the end of a day to finish off a piece of work is much more productive given you are already thinking about it, have files open etc. Stopping and going in on Monday to start all over again is incredibly inefficient.

Actually, people see these ~5 weeks of vacation as a right. And still the wages therewith are fine. Mainly people take these weeks off during July/August, where their children have summer holidays. So it is one of the least productive months of the year :)

But nevertheless, people accomodate to it, and don't necessarilly treat it as lower rights. Usually people have around 23-25 working days off per year. You are actually forced to take it. If not in one year, then you have to take it until end of March of the next year. I don't know many people working during their vacation.

Call it what you will, fantasy, illusion, I'm at a point at which I think that humans are congenitally prone to that sort of fantasy because there's a very real need. To NWAsMostWanted: When you or I loan money to someone we first have to produce something and get paid for it before we loan it out. The bank that the gov borrows money from is the Federal Reserve. The money that the Fed loans is not money that someone earned and deposit in the bank, the money the Fed loans is simply a check made out to the gov. There is no real production behind it. The check has the same purchasing power as a check that you or I may write. It is indeed just printed.

Besides, I would like to see your statistics that says that government is always inefficient. For example, Canada's single payer health insurance has an overhead of 1.3%, whereas the average private insurer has at least 10-15%. Living where I do with many efficient government entities (and I suspect much of Europe is similar), I must humbly disagree with that theoretical model.

@dherma im not familiar with canada, but i can look at american and japanese and british history and it shows that giving the money supply to the central bank has always ended up in a huge bust. as far departments such as education goes, they have proven inefficient. History shows that government is inherently inefficient. If there is choice schooling or choice medicine (not insurance) then creates competition, efficiency and innovation. government picking winners is never good.

Still, I think that government should take a more active role in regulation and education, not backing off as Austrian schoolers would suggest. To generalize that all central banks and governments are useless is completely false. Most countries (such as Canada) have a financial sector that didn't engage in risky lending and survived just fine financially (even with the evil central banks offering similar interest rates)

The housing bubble has nothing to do with the central banks, and everything to do with lax credit regulations, predatory lenders, and consumers who stretch their budgets to the limit. Stagflation was due to an oil shock, which the banks tried (unsuccessfully) to correct by raising interest rates. However, such a policy may well have prevented hyperinflation. The Great Depression was sparked by stock market failure and excessive risk-taking

I worry about these analogies... the macroeconomy is exceedingly complicated and I feel like he's oversimplifying the issues. Yes, absolutely people should stop spending like it's going out of style and governments have to adopt fiscal responsibility, but the idea that central banks are to blame for all of this is ludicrous. The Austrian school of economics (which he is parroting word for word) lacks credibility and has very little evidence in its favour compared with mainstream branches.

I agree Peter...despite it being better to legalize drugs for all the reasons you said, no need to get yourself killed. Esp. since the US gov pushes legal and illegal drugs on their own as well. Well, if you lose by being right, then I guess that's how seeing that he was the only one there who ended up being right. And that's really what's important and people really need to wake up and listen to him. It's nonsense to ignore the one single person who warned us for years and with uncanny detail predicted EXACTLY what would happen AND WHY!
