@vibonacci He's not saying that "knowing" the theory will limit you. He's saying that "thinking" from the perspective of "I can ONLY use this certain scale over THIS chord will limit your ability to perceive sweet sounding notes. It's like if you teach someone a harmonic minor scale... and then instead of LISTENING to the notes they're playing.. they automatically craft their leads based on the mechanical "box" of that scale.. Basically, he's saying "LISTEN TO WHAT YOU'RE PLAYING!"

Marty Friedman is a guitar virtuoso. He played with people like Paul Gilbert and Jason Becker and in the 80's he got invited in all kinds of tv shows were he played with other famous guitarists. What I've noticed that all the people that are vommiting over Marty never picked up a fucking guitar in their whole entire live, so who are they to judge? He stares a lot in this video but I like his calm way of explaining things. He is really about the music and not a poseur like many others.

@MrPulpar LOL, that's what you understood from watching this video? He's basically saying that everyone should develop his own style (and scales) by experimenting, instead of learning all scales in a mechanical way and end up sounding like every other "robotic" guitarist out there. BTW, do you even know who Marty Friedman is? The guy is a musical genious, he has composed lots of incredible music and he's able to improvise an amazing solo over any chord progression at any given time.

@Arachnidius then B-G# (B12-E16) is back to B Spanish Phrygian to finish it off... if you want to keep similar to the rest of your scale by missing out the 7th play (high) E19 to return to your root at the top end (to make it B-B)... if you want to add in these 7ths play E17-19 so its two different scales alternating between octaves :D...

@Arachnidius from B-B (E7-D9) it would be B phrygian harmonic minor minus the 7th (AKA. B Spanish Phrygian minus the 7th) ... to add this 7th back in play D7 just after A11 (there is a degree missing from the first octave) then next B-B (D9-B12)which is also missing its 7th degree just Dorian Mode ... put in a flat 7th to complete it (after G13 play B10)

@toyouimshort 'guys' here is being used as a term for 'guitarists' ... you can substitute quite a lot of words in instead... like a scottish (particularly west of scotland) favourite is 'cunts' "a lot of cunts get caught up" ... "aww come-on! every-cunt is coming" or mabey its an insult to male guitarists... in that girl guitarists don't have the same problem... they learn this part piss easy ... but i think you knew what he meant and just wanted to be a cunt. and i acutally mean cunt.

I really recommend getting used to using your little finger....it's really a shame to not use it...especially when you are starting out. Easier to create good habits rather than try and break them later.

I'm primarily a drummer but I try to play Jazz stuff over all the double bass work and heavy drumming and with Guitar I plan on doing the same kinda thing, incorporate other styles into Progressive Metal. So, these 4 scales and chords would be a good start?

In your more modern metal type groups they've tended to add more complete diatonic, harmonic, and melodic scales. You should get a good scale book and gradually add this knowledge to your workout. Good luck.

Try and recognize the sound of these notes in the music you listen to. Guitarists use these notes to jam and improvise with. Listen to blues and try and hear when these notes are being used. Good luck!

I've just learned this, no how far can this scale get me? I know a few chords to. What I'm going to do now is work my way up in speed using this scale, chords and a metronome. I'll still learn the other scales but am I in a good position? Bear in mind I've only been playing a week.

@SGxGuitar sorry dude but this isn't true. i found another site and it says position one (IE the classic one) starts on a fret with the root note and the order follows. EG in gminor the position one (e form) starts on fret 3 with the d form on fret 5 and in A the e form starts on fret 5 and the d form starts on fret 7. this is how you transpose :D

I'm just starting to learn how to play the guitar and I notice that all guitar players the tips of their pinky fingers line up or go a little past the first knuckle of their ring finger. My pinky finger tip just barely comes up to the first knuckle of my ring finger. So with that in mind, I find it hard to reach the top string of any fret w/ my pinky finger so should I just use my ring finger instead since it's more comfortable or not??? Thanks.

C minor is the relative of E?/D? major (remember minors are down 3 semi-tones from their relative major) consisting of C, D, E?, F, G, A?, and B?, in natural. Raise the 6th and 7th notes of that scale to get C, D, E?, F, G, A, and B for the ascending melodic minor.

@ionas82 I have an answer to "A": It can technically be called D# major scale but it is more commonly know as E flat. This can get kind of confusing to explain why and im sure this guy making these videos would do it better than me. It is a good idea to learn all of the major scales for sure. If he doesn't have a video that explains the c"ircle of fifths" or "circle of fourths" you should definitely look it up online. It'll clear up the world of scales a lot.

@jennyomalley every note in music has a name - letter , they go like this : E F F#/Gb G G#/Ab A A#Bb B C C#/Db D D#/Eb and then E again . @doowop2302 yes, you're right. If he hadn't gave them the 6th they would sing the major scale but it's natural. It's exactly like u said - he planted the scale in their heads both by singing the notes and (much more importantly) by improvising over audience singing. But I wouldn't see it as cheating. He just showed that every simple person, who has no idea about scales and pentatonics (that they even exist), is naturally and unconsciously able to 'feel' the pentatonic scale.

Personally, being a guitarist and understanding just how simple the pentatonic scale is, I think this comes down to some sort of simple mathematical pattern. The issue comes with subject matter, because what you think is funny is different than what the world thinks is funny. Plus there's a matter in length of premise, punchline, and ending to the story. The closer to that story is just a line he had from another comedy special and probably felt that it wasn't finished. That's what I took from it.

The guitar is a Guild X-170 Manhattan. They don't make them anymore. It's a maple laminate semi-hollowbody electric with SD1 pickups. In the video they have a microphone in one of the f-holes, one on the amp and probably another picking up ambient room sound. They mixed it so that you hear more of an acoustic sound than you will actually hear if you're in a room playing the through an amp. I'm fairly certain the amp is an older American made Fender Blues Junior.
