I completely agree with you. Yet, many people in developing countries don't actually have the freedom that we both think they ideally should. I guess if I didn't have the ability to have freedom to choose, even if I was a political activist working for that freedom, I would hope someone would provide assistance from the outside. So many are disparaging because of lack basic necessities, that are readily available in rich countries. I am not promoting socialism, only sustainable development.

Each culture should be allowed the freedom to choose how they wish to be governed and if they choose wisely and can hold true to their values, they will succeed in ways that others might never understand. Whenever a government dictates to it's people, instead of the people, dictating to their government, you will find the resources and economic wealth, held tightly, in the hands of the ruling elite.

If we can't at least try to be equal economically then I think I would prefer to be on the rich side, yet you are welcome to be on the poor side. His synthesis is interesting - but I think we need to divide "global poor" into two categories - poor {Rich World}, and poor {Developing countries}. Whereas there is enough factual data and evidence to suggest that the poor in the developing countries have immensely benefited from globalization the same can't be said about their rich world counterparts. In fact , whereas all the three classes of people {Rich, middle, Poor} in the developing countries have prospered due to globalization (contd)

The point is that it gives them a choice-having jobs for an excess labor force is far more important than having "labor rights" for the impoverished unemployed in developing countries. The most important right for them is having a job so they can feed themselves and their families. That is their right to choose, if they do not wish to take a job they do not have to. I sincerely doubt the Chinese or the Russians would be willing to go along with a world government, especially one led by the disgraced state of Israel. Israel can barely manage Gaza, the US cannot even stop an oil leak and is having trouble managing Afghanistan or Iraq. His claim that corporations don't exert influence on governments/nations is laughable. Actually its not laughable, its flat out dangerous. I would have assumed a man who has the experience of Giddens, who has the kind of intelligence that makes him able to speak fluently for an hour without lecture notes (no mean feat in my book), could believe such a thing. The local governments are the ones who make deals with the companies. As far as arms sales, well like any other segment of economics wherever there is a demand there will b a supply. Arms merchants will sell 2 whoever buys their product just like drug dealers deal to those who want drugs. If 1 is incapable of extractin n exploitin resources n makin them in2 finish goods then some1 else will come along n fill that niche as well. Something or some1 will always fill a vacumm, just a fact.

Interesting video. Where does the money come from for the arms? If the funds dried up, so would the arms. If the focus was placed on the decision makers to get them to spend the money on micro loans, on infrastructure and change the game into creating thriving economies.
